Nutritional supplements are everywhere. You can purchase them at health food stores, pharmacies, grocery stores, and even the dollar store. There are infomercials on TV, ads in your mailbox, and of course your friend who is selling the latest multilevel marketed product. How do you really know if a product is in fact as good as the claims made about it? How do you know that the product is just what you need? And even more serious, how do you know that the product won t harm you? An important starting point is to realize that very few companies are primary manufacturers they don t really make anything. They buy the various ingredients from other companies, and then put them together in a capsule or tablet. So most of the products you purchase, despite the brand, in reality all come from the same source companies. A few ingredients may vary; one brand may contain more beta-carotene and another brand more lycopene. But essentially, the majority of all products come from the same place - so much for unique claims. What about the companies that are actually making the ingredients? Notice the word making as opposed to growing. These companies do not have farms where they grow nutrient-dense produce to use in their products. Technology allows them to separate parts of whole foods into individual components and to artificially produce these isolated substances. The result is incomplete parts of vitamins that are very difficult for the body to use. They call these ingredients natural which has become a meaningless term in the supplement business. The term natural is not regulated and essentially is of no value; advertisers can use the term about virtually anything. Oyster shells and arsenic are natural, one a lousy form of calcium and the other a poison. Did you ever look at a supplement pill that claims all you need is one a day? When you look at all the vitamins and minerals it contains, often 20 to 30, the obvious question is, How did they fit all that stuff in that small pill? They either have to hire David Copperfield or use isolated synthetic parts of the original natural nutrients. There are only a few companies that actually use real ingredients nutrients that were in fact grown in organic soil and left in this original form. This means you are consuming food with all the natural occurring nutrients that are supposed to be there. Real food is complex and a mix of many components, some yet to be even identified or understood. It does make a difference if the supplements you take are food based or not. Often one hears about a study where the researchers concluded that a certain vitamin failed to help a certain condition. Inevitably the vitamin used was a synthetic, incomplete part of a vitamin and not the real thing. Consider the following; lycopene is a nutrient that has become popular in the last several years. Animal studies show that taking isolated lycopene offered little protection from certain cancers. Other studies where animals were fed tomato powder, which contains natural occurring lycopene, noted increased cancer protection. Another study where dried garlic powder was given to men who exhibited certain cardiac risk factors failed to show any benefit. However other studies where organic garlic, left in its original form and placed in capsules, lowered cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Many other examples could be stated, but the point is clear supplements should be made from food. Food-based supplements are rare in our profit driven society. Why not use inexpensive isolated or synthetic ingredients as opposed to real food-based products that will usually be more expensive? For the most part, the public will not understand the difference. Consider the average health food store, many of the products are far from healthy, but the confused or deceived consumer seldom knows. Products often contain refined sugars and flours, harmful sweeteners, and oils that should never be consumed. If you put no cholesterol or natural ingredients or contains herbs on the label the product will sell. They use the word soy like it is actually good for you. And the supplements, you guessed it; most are the same non-food ones that almost everyone else sells. What if a health food store was really a health food store where we could buy a free-range chicken, organic carrots and broccoli, and other healthy foods? They do exist, but unfortunately few and far between. It has become difficult for most people to eat a good diet. The busyness of our lives often forces us to consume foods that are convenient versus nutritious. Even if we try to avoid white breads and sugars, processed foods, hydrogenated oils, and artificial sweeteners a problem remains. Because most crops are grown in soil that is depleted of nutrients with dangerous pesticides and herbicides, even fresh produce is not what it used to be. Also when shipping, processing, storing, canning, and freezing take place, the end result is that we purchase food that has only a fraction of its intended nutrients. Nutritional supplements can play an important role in our journey towards health. Not only can they be used to make up for inadequacies in our diet and to support our overall health, they can also help with particular health problems that we are experiencing. Many times people are taking prescription drugs in an attempt to make up for nutritional inadequacies. The supplemental program that is right for you should be based upon your own unique needs. One of the purposes of our office is to help you navigate through this complicated area. Real food is important, on your plate and in your supplements. `j4l4ь4ю4њээCJ65]\OJQJ CJ5\`b* , ln\^&(*œ#ž#T+V+$0њѕѓёьчтнигЮЩФПКЕАЋІ$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$&&&$a$&$a$$0&0f4h4j4ь4ю4њѕ№ыцф$a$$a$$a$$a$$a$0Аа/ Ар=!
